Detect legally and leave no trace
Get the landowner's permission in writing before you detect anywhere you do not own. National parks,
scheduled monuments, protected archaeological sites and most historic battlefields are off limits in
the great majority of jurisdictions, and the penalties are serious. Report finds under whatever
treasure or portable antiquities scheme applies where you live. Fill every hole you open, leave the
turf as you found it, and take your trash home. Detecting law is local and changes: check your own
national, state, county and municipal rules before you swing anywhere new.
Researched, not professional advice. DetectorCalc publishes gear
research and reference tables compiled from manufacturer specifications, owner manuals, published
listing data and the consensus of verified owner reviews. We do not test machines in person and we do
not publish find claims. Target ID numbers, depth figures and settings vary with soil, moisture,
target size, orientation and machine firmware: treat every table here as a starting point to verify
against your own machine's manual and your own ground.
