A Manticore does not find a different class of target than an Equinox 900. It finds the same targets deeper in difficult ground, and it shows you more about them before you cut turf. If your sites are ordinary parks and pasture with mild soil, the extra money buys you very little you will notice, and the sensible move is to buy the 900 and spend the difference on coils, a pinpointer and petrol to better permissions.

That said, the Manticore is not a badge exercise. Minelab publishes Multi-IQ+ as carrying 50 percent more power than traditional models and describes it as the highest-powered simultaneous multi-frequency machine on the market, and it publishes ten search modes against the Equinox four. Extra transmit power genuinely does buy depth where mineralisation is eating your signal, which is red clay, old brick ground, black sand and mining country. What does the Manticore actually do that the Equinox does not?

Two things the listings support. It transmits more power, which Minelab quantifies as 50 percent more than traditional models, and it displays targets on a two-dimensional map rather than as a single number. The first matters in ground that absorbs signal. The second matters in ground that is full of iron, because a number alone cannot tell you whether you are hearing one good target or two bad ones, and a position on a map often can.

It also publishes ten search modes, including All-Terrain for inland work, Beach for sand and surf and Goldfield for nuggets, against the four Park, Field, Beach and Gold modes on the 900. More modes is not automatically better. It is more surface area to learn and more ways to have the machine set up wrong, which is why plenty of experienced owners run flagship machines on two modes and never touch the rest.

Who genuinely needs the Manticore?

People hunting ground that is fighting them. Heavily mineralised soil, hot rocks, black sand, saltwater beaches worked hard by other detectorists, and old sites where every good target sits inside a halo of nails. In those conditions extra power and a better target display are not luxuries, they are the difference between a signal you can read and a signal you dismiss. Owners working that sort of ground consistently report that the 2D display is the feature they would not give back.

Also anyone who already owns an Equinox and has run out of ground rather than out of machine. That is a real situation, and it is different from believing a new detector will fix a slow season. Who should stay with the Equinox 900?

Nearly everyone else. The 900 arrives with two coils, publishes a 2.8 lb weight and a 24 inch packed length, and runs the same Multi-IQ engine that made the range what it is. The money you keep buys Minelab EQX 15 Coil (15 inch) for open fields, Garrett Pro-Pointer AT for recovery, and LimbSaver Comfort-Tech Metal Detector Sling so that you can still swing at hour four, which is the hour that produces finds.

It is also the right choice if you are still learning a multi-frequency machine. Ten modes on a detector you do not yet read fluently is a way of hiding from the thing that actually improves results, which is time on one machine in one patch of ground. The 900 against the 700 is worth reading next if you are not yet committed to the higher of the two Equinox bodies.

Does the Manticore replace a dedicated gold machine?

Not for the smallest gold. Minelab publishes a Goldfield mode on the Manticore and a Gold mode on the 900, and both will find nuggets of reasonable size. Dedicated prospecting machines run much higher frequencies for a reason: Minelab Gold Monster 1000 at 45 kHz and Fisher Gold Bug 2 at 71 kHz exist because sub-gram gold barely responds at coin frequencies. For jewellery, which is what most people mean when they say gold, either machine is fine and the coil matters more than the badge. A small coil concentrates its field, which is why thin chains often read better on a 6 inch coil than on a 15.

Is the Manticore really 50 percent more powerful?

Minelab publishes that figure for Multi-IQ+ against what it calls traditional models, and it is the maker own claim rather than an independent measurement. Transmit power is also not the same thing as depth: soil mineralisation, coil size and target size all take their cut afterwards. Read it as a genuine engineering difference that shows up most in difficult ground and least in mild soil.

Will a Manticore find coins an Equinox 900 missed?

In mineralised ground and in heavy iron, sometimes yes, because the extra power and the two-dimensional display give you a readable signal where the 900 gives you a doubtful one. On clean mild soil that has been hunted carefully, mostly no. The targets left behind on most sites are masked rather than deep, and masking is a coil and recovery speed problem before it is a power problem.

Do the Equinox coils fit the Manticore?

Minelab publishes the EQX 06, EQX 11 and EQX 15 coils as fitting the Equinox series and the X-Terra Pro, and the Coiltek NOX range the same way. The Manticore has its own coil line. Check the current Minelab compatibility list before you buy a coil for either machine, because fitting the wrong one at best does nothing and at worst damages the detector.

How much does the Manticore weigh?

Minelab does not publish a weight in the Manticore listing, so we do not print one. What it does publish is the fold length, 56.7 inches down to 24.8 inches. The Equinox 900 publishes 2.8 lb with carbon fibre shafts.
